RTW Inspiration: Travel Themes

Not everyone needs an inspiration to take a RTW trip, but sometimes it’s fun to have a theme for a journey. Some people take cooking classes, some go in search of Icelandic elves, some skydive in each place they visit, some go birdwatching around the world – the list of possibilities is endless. The main thing is to make sure it’s something that interests you.

A popular quest for many travelers is to follow the sun around the world. It’s not difficult to do this, since there’s always some place on the planet that’s warm no matter what time of year it is, but sometimes going where the sun is means going at the most expensive time of year. Ideal weather does, after all, tend to indicate the high season. Luckily, there are enough places that are delightful weather-wise during the shoulder season that you don’t have to spend a fortune to visit.

One fun activity many people all over the planet take part in – whether they’re traveling or not – is geocaching. It’s something you can do where you live, hunting down caches and hiding your own for others to find, but it’s widespread enough now that you can go geocaching around the world. All it takes is a GPS unit or a geocaching app on an iPhone – it’s an activity that can get you away from the usual stops on a traveler’s itinerary, and potentially help you interact with the locals, too.

For anyone who’s traveling on a budget, there are all kinds of things you can do to get away from your normal routine without blowing a lot of money. Not only that, there are some places where the normal tourist routine includes free activities and attractions. The free ways to discover a destination vary depending on where you are, but in many places you can find free museums, art-filled churches with free entry, free city walking tours, free outdoor concerts or movies, and free festivals. It’s always worth a stop at the tourist information office to find out what you can do for free in a given location.
